About Attorney Churchill...
John A. Churchill graduated from the University of Maine in Orono in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. He served for three years in the U.S. Army including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Attorney Churchill graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in June of 1975 (Cum Laude) and has practiced law in Calais since being admitted to the bar in September of 1975. He is a member in good standing of the Bars of the State of Maine, the Federal Court and the Passamaquoddy tribal Court. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a member in the Washington County and Maine Bar associations.
Real Estate
Attorney Churchill has represented both buyers and sellers of real estate, residential, recreational and commercial, and maintains an extensive computerized database of real estate titles. He performs title searches, drafts deeds and contracts and represents parties in all aspects of real estate transfers. He has also litegated real estate matters including boundary line disputes, trespass and disputes over access to property. He is knowledgeable in zoning and municipal regulation of real estate.
Criminal Law
Attorney Churchill has defended criminal cases in both the District and Superior Courts of the State of Maine for 25 years. He has extensive experience both in  jury trials before the Superior Court and in trying jury-waived cases in the District Court. He has successfully defended those charged with the most serious felonies and those charged with misdemeanors. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Civil Litigation
Personal injury actions, whether as a result of an automobile accident or other cause, have been a specialty of Attorney Churchill for 25 years. He has also successfully litigated cases involving employment discrimination, intentional infliction of emotional distress and other similar injuries to persons and property. He negotiates settlements of claims with insurance companies and adjusters to reach a fair settlement of any claim, regardless of nature or type of injuries.
Domestic Relations
Nearly 25% of Attorney Churchill's caseload is in the area of domestic relations. He handles divorces, paternity suits and post-judgment motions both in the District, Superior and Tribal Courts.
Wills and Probate
Attorney Churchill provides advice on estate planning and drafts wills, trust and other documents necessary to the formulation of a complete estate plan. When probate of an estate is necessary, Attorney Churchill undertakes the work in an expeditious manner and at a reasonable cost to his clients. Attorney Churchill has also been involved in litigation over the validity or interpretation of wills in Probate courts throughout the State.
Labor and Employment Matters
Attorney Churchill regularly represents clients in unemployment hearings and provides advice regarding disputes between Employers and Employees. He negotiates labor contracts on behalf of municipalities and has experience in grievance and arbitration matters as a representative of both employees and employers.
Corporations and Contracts
Attorney Churchill has formed and is the clerk for many local small business corporations. He provides advice on business matters in general, forms partnerships, corporations, and other business entities and prepares contracts and other documents necessary to business relationships.
